| What
is Discovery?
Discovery weekend was started from a vision Melody had during
her years as a pastor in the local church. In 1997, she heard
God tell her, “Create a junior high weekend for spiritual
formation held in the local church similar to Chrysalis.”
Melody, her youth and adults of First United Methodist Church
went on to create three weekends for youth spiritual formation.
Discovery is a cross between a Vacation Bible School where
the whole church participates to bring the youth to a deeper
level of God’s love and a camp experience where youth
feel and know the reality of God’s presence. The weekend
is co-ed for 6th -12th graders. If your church does not have
6th graders in youth then the 7th and 8th graders would attend.
The youth spend the night at the church or go home at night.
Each church tailor makes the weekend to fit their needs.
Small churches do not really distinguish between grades. All the youth are together for the planning of the weekend and the actual weekend. Small churches have had wonderful weekends and the youth really do love all the special attention and the learning that takes place.
Discovery is endorsed by The Upper Room, The United Methodist
Church and the Episcopal Dioceses of Alabama. We are an ecumenical
ministry with a vision to help churches lead youth to a deeper
level of God’ love.
